Kate McLean is a director and producer based in San Francisco. Her dramatic feature Freeland, starring Krisha Fairchild and co-directed with Mario Furloni, was selected to premiere at SXSW 2020 and screen at the 2020 SFFILM Festival. The Hollywood Reporter called it a "portrait of a seismic shift," and a “beautifully etched character study.” Freeland was the recipient of two SFFILM/KRF grants, and was selected for an SFFILM residency and the IFP Labs.

Kate produced the 2020 documentary We Are As Gods, about counterculture icon Stewart Brand (SXSW 2020, HotDocs, SFFILM, CPH:DOX). She also produced Jamie Meltzer’s 2017 documentary True Conviction, which was supported by Sundance, Tribeca, ITVS, Impact Partners and the MacArthur Foundation, and broadcast on PBS. The same year, she produced the 2017 documentary Bill Nye: Science Guy, (SXSW, CPH:DOX, HotDocs, SFFILM, AFI, Traverse City, PBS, Netflix).

Three of her short documentaries, Gut Hack (directed with Mario Furloni), The Caretaker (directed with Theo Rigby) and “Marathon” have been featured in the New York Times Op-Docs series.

Kate is a 2015 Sundance Creative Producing Summit Fellow, and has a master’s degree from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
