At Film Fatales, we believe in equity, inclusion, and empathy. We champion authentic authorship and paying it forward to the next generation. We acknowledge that the current power structures in the film industry and the world favor white, cis, straight, wealthy, and/or non-disabled people and we are committed to undoing harmful practices in the film industry and internal biases within ourselves. Cinema has the power to build a more just world and it starts here.

This is an inclusive community and absolutely no racism, sexism, ageism, classism, ableism, fatphobia, or other forms of oppression will be tolerated.

Land Acknowledgement

As an organization that supports filmmakers around the world, we acknowledge that many of us are on stolen land. We want to move from intention to action. If you are an Indigenous filmmaker, please contact us for a waived membership.

During virtual events, we encourage you to introduce yourself in the chat and share the traditional lands you are calling in from. If you are unfamiliar with the history of the land you are on, you can look it up here.

Make Space: Take Space

Creating an inclusive space requires an acknowledgement of existing power dynamics. If you are from a dominant or privileged identity (white, straight, middle-class, non-disabled, etc) please practice making space through listening, unseating yourself, and passing the mic. If you are from a historically marginalized group, please practice taking up space through sharing your ideas, raising your voice and letting us know how to support.

We strive to make our virtual and in-person events safe and welcoming spaces for filmmakers to connect with each other. Please avoid assuming people’s needs, gender identity and/or backgrounds.

This is an inclusive community and absolutely no racism, sexism, ageism, classism, ableism, fatphobia, or other forms of oppression will be tolerated.

Virtual Events

The Three C’s

  • Confidentiality: Please do not screenshot, record or share notes without prior consent.
  • Citation: When possible, cite those whose ideas you share and build upon with attribution.
  • Compassion: Be respectful to other filmmaker participants when using the chat and/or Q&A function.

Pronouns and Inclusive Self Introductions

We encourage you to update your zoom name to include your pronouns. Simply hover your mouse over your video square in the gallery and choose “rename” from the drop-down menu at the top right corner. More information on pronouns and why they are important can be found here.

If your camera is on, please visually describe yourself. This helps blind or low vision participants gain information about the people and diversity of the panel or meeting that non-blind people take in visually. Be concise and keep it to the important information. Remember that self-description is a political and personal act as it is a way to affirm your identity. Your choice of words can help create an inclusive and welcoming environment. If you feel at all uncomfortable or unsafe sharing your identity as presented visually, you are always welcome to decline.

Accessibility

  • Live captions are enabled in the main room. These work best when only one person speaks at a time, so please be patient.
  • When speaking, please announce your name and, if comfortable, share your pronouns.
  • Recognize that some people may be taking care of others and need to suddenly step away.
  • Please use trigger warning if you will be sharing anything of a sensitive nature.

For Our Virtual Social Mixers

These interactive sessions are not recorded and active participation is encouraged. We invite you to turn your cameras on and mute your microphones unless you are speaking. Our breakout rooms are not moderated so if you are uncomfortable for any reason you can always return to the main room by hitting the “leave room” button at the bottom of your screen. Please be mindful of this shared space and divide the time evenly within your discussion circles.
