2018 and 2015 Regional Emmy Award Winner and 2010 McKnight Filmmaking Fellow, Mikkelson’s work has been seen on PBS and has screened at international festivals including the Galway Film Fleadh, Cambridge Film Festival, International Documentary Festival Amsterdam, and Leipzig DOK Market. Mikkelson has completed five award-winning independent feature documentaries, "Risking Light" (which premiered at the 2018 Cinequest Film Festival), “The Red Tail”, “Green Green Water”, “THIS obedience”, and “Treading Water: a documentary”.  A former television news reporter, Mikkelson has written editorial content and served as guest for MPR (Minnesota Public Radio) and produces for Twin Cities PBS. Mikkelson is the founder of Emergence Pictures, a documentary production company based in Wisconsin. In 2006 Mikkelson’s film, “Hope for Recovery: Understanding Mental Illness” won the Eric Sevareid Award by the Northwest Broadcast News Association (NBNA). Mikkelson is a recent recipient of support from Big Vision Empty Wallet, a program focused on leveraging the work of underrepresented filmmakers. She's currently in post-production on a film about the Minnesota RollerGirls and production on a film about women in Taiko Drumming.
