SUMMARY:The Power of Stories Members
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales members were invited to an intimate fireside chat with writers and showrunners Elle Johnson (Bosch\, Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker)\, Keisha Zollar (Dying For Sex\, Mike) and Melinda Hsu (Nancy Drew\, Tom Swift\, Lost). Moderated by gender equity expert Vicki Shabo from New America with opening remarks from film and television director Rachel Feldman (Lilly\, The Baxters). \n At a moment when women’s rights and gender equity are under attack\, female-forward stories that include authentic depictions of women and gender expansive voices couldn’t be more important and continue to be audience-pleasers – and yet the conventional wisdom is that “muscular” stories are more likely to appeal to viewers. Come hear from television and film creatives about recent projects that center women’s lives and the stories they carry as they navigate jobs\, family\, and relationships on screen. We’ll discuss the power and pitfalls of selling and telling stories about women’s full lives and share data on audiences’ desire for authentic\, inclusive storytelling about gender\, work\, family\, and care. This intimate gathering offers television creators and filmmakers an opportunity to dive into the cultural impact of storytelling while giving space to trade insights\, share resources\, and connect with others interested in amplifying underrepresented voices in the film industry. Light bites provided.

SUMMARY:SXSW Filmmaker Brunch
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales and New America’s Entertainment Initiative hosted an intimate private brunch during the SXSW Film Festival highlighting a conversation centered around gender\, work\, family\, care and representation on and off screen. We each have lived experiences\, family backgrounds\, and hopes and fears about the future that shape our own views about navigating work\, family\, and care—yet American culture often leaves us feeling alone and unsupported. People often feel that the challenges of managing jobs and family or personal needs are private and ours alone to bear. Yet there is joy and strength in building community\, recognizing shared struggles\, and engaging in discussion about a desire for change on screen and in life.  \nThis candid discussion was led by Alyse Walsh (Baby/Girls)\, Luchina Fisher (The Dads) and Vicki Shabo (New America) about why visibility and representation matter\, and how art can change culture and policy. Followed by a sit-down brunch for Film Fatales members attending the fest. We look forward to seeing you next time!

SUMMARY:From Script to Screen Members
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales hosted a panel discussion and reception during the Sundance Film Festival. \nWe discovered groundbreaking works of independent cinema in this panel highlighting visionary filmmakers who directed feature films premiering at Sundance including Josephine Decker (Chasing Summer)\, Liz Sargent (Take Me Home)\, and NB Mager (Run Amok). Moderated by Imani Davis (American Cinematheque). \nPresented by United Airlines with support from IMDbPro and the Utah Film Commission. \nAt a time when funding for the arts is drying up\, we learned from Film Fatales members with Sundance premieres about how they got their films funded and made. How helpful are proof of concepts? What types of institutional support or corporate sponsorships are available? What is the path forward in the current economic climate? The panel covered evolving techniques in storytelling\, the importance of diverse perspectives\, and how these iconic filmmakers are pushing the boundaries of cinema on screen and off.

DESCRIPTION:Currently\, 1 in 5 people in Los Angeles experience hunger. Film Fatales and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank joined in the fight against hunger in our local communities. We helped assemble food packages for children\, families\, and seniors across Los Angeles County. The food packages consist of shelf-stable food items such as grains\, canned fruits and vegetables\, and protein. Together\, we sorted and packed produce for over 29\,000 people who face food insecurity in Los Angeles\, and we got to know each other better in the process.

SUMMARY:Changing the Ratio Oscars
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales hosted an in-person cocktail reception in Los Angeles as we celebrate with like-minded folks interested in amplifying underrepresented voices during awards season. There was a panel discussion with Gotham award winning filmmaker Vera Drew and Academy Award nominated composer Laura Karpman\, followed by a reception celebrating creators of all marginalized genders. With some light bites\, great music\, and plenty of good cheer to go around. Co-hosted by the AWFC\, Film Fatales\, ReFrame and WIF. Sponsored by Paramount+. \nChanging the Ratio is a cross disciplinary networking event for industry professionals celebrating women\, trans and/or nonbinary filmmakers during awards season. Our focus is to shine a light on some of the amazing projects and their creators from this year as we come together for a night of industry conversation and networking with professional filmmakers\, crew\, and influential industry decision-makers. \nFilm Fatales recently launched the Parity Pipeilne\, a results-driven initiative that fights inequities in the film industry by connecting underrepresented filmmakers directly with key decision-makers seeking to hire equitably and program inclusively. \nReFrame is getting ready to release its WHAT TO WATCH: 2026 Film FYC Guide. As part of WIF’s mission to advocate for change\, the Voter Guide aims to amplify the work of deserving women\, trans\, and nonbinary folk\, serving as a go-to resource for industry voters who are conscious of gender bias and desire equity in the industry. \nWith the current underrepresentation of women and non-binary creatives across technical and craft categories – from directors to composers\, cinematographers\, VFX and editors – our collective goal with this event is to carve out and occupy shared space. As film award  season is underway\, this event will highlight members across our organizations who have the potential to be nominated and considered for awards.

SUMMARY:Virtual Shadowing 2025 Members
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales and Scriptation hosted an in-depth Episodic Television Directing Class with two-time Emmy award-winning television director Mary Lou Belli\, whose directing credits include Elsbeth\, True Lies\, Sweet Magnolias\, NCIS: New Orleans\, and The Ms. Pat Show. \nSix Film Fatales members participated live in this highly interactive class as Virtual Shadows including: Anna Fahr\, Christina YR Lim\, Lilian T. Mehrel\, Melissa Haizlip\, Sonia Sebastian\, and Whitney Clinkscales. \nFilmmakers of all experience levels are invited to observe the class to learn how to prep from a working TV director! Together we will explore casting\, location scouting\, script breakdown\, scene blocking\, overheads\, and shot listing. Compare your work to an episode that has already aired and evaluate how your choices would be an alternative option or what you might change to make the work more “shootable.” \nMary Lou’s extensive teaching experience includes the 2023 Warner Brothers Discovery Access Directors Program as well as many vibrant diversity programs including ABC/Disney\, CBS\, Sony\, HBO Access\, and AFIDWW+.
