Yu Gu is a filmmaker and visual artist born in Chongqing, China and raised in Vancouver, Canada. She explores themes of identity, migration and artistic freedom with a lyrical and visceral approach. Yu’s hybrid documentary A MOTH IN SPRING premiered at Hot Docs International Film Festival and was broadcast by HBO. Her first feature documentary, WHO IS ARTHUR CHU? Following a Jeopardy! “villain” turned blogger and activist premiered at the 2017 Slamdance Film Festival and garnered two Best Documentary Awards on the festival circuit. After theatrical premieres at Music Box Theatre Chicago and Arclight LA, the film was broadcast on Emmy Award-winning series America Reframed on PBS and released across all digital platforms by Vega Baby US. Her second documentary, A WOMAN’S WORK, follows young women fighting for legal pay and workplace rights as former cheerleaders in the multi-billion dollar industry of the NFL. The film premiered in competition at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and is supported by the Sundance Institute, ITVS, Tribeca Film Institute, Firelight Media, Film Independent and the Rockefeller Foundation. Yu won the Best Emerging Filmmaker Award at the 2019 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Yu received her MFA in film production from the University of Southern California.
