Anne Misawa

Having graduated from the University of Southern California’s Graduate Cinema & TV Production Program, Anne Misawa has worked internationally in various aspects of film production on numerous award-winning work.  Her primary work is as a Producer, Director and as a Cinematographer. Her recent work include the feature documentary A PARADISE LOST, (as a Producer, Director of Photography, directed by Laurie Sumiye, 2025), and she has worked on several films screened more recently at the Hawaiʻi Int. Film, in 2021-- I WAS A SIMPLE MAN, (Co-Producer, Sundance Film Festival 2021; directed by Christopher Makoto Yogi), REEL WAHINE 3 JOY CHONG STANNARD, (Producer/ Director, awarded BEA Media Arts Festival Best in Competition Award for Microdoc, Emmy Award for series), and LAST HAWAIIAN SUGAR, (Director of Photography; directed by Déjà Bernhardt), and in 2020, the feature film STORY GAME, (Director of Photography; directed by Jason Lau). Her work as Director of Photography also includes—feature films MARGARITA, WITH A STRAW, (directed by Shonali Bose, Sundance Institute’s Mahindra Global Filmmaking Award 2012, NETPAC award at Toronto Int. Film Festival, Busan Int. Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, 2014, 130+ film festivals, 25 awards,) JACK & DIANE, (directed by Bradley-Rust Gray, Tribeca Film Festival, Locarno Int. Film Festival, 2012), TREELESS MOUNTAIN, (directed by So Yong Kim, NETPAC award at Busan Int. Film Festival, Toronto Int. Film Festival, Berlin Int. Film Festival, and New Directors/ New Films, 2008), short TIME OUT, (directed by Xelinda Yancy, executive produced by John Singleton, HBO Award, 2004), SALT, (directed by Bradley-Rust Gray, Caligari Award for Innovative Filmmaking at Berlin Int. Film Festival, 2003), and short LIV, (directed by Edoardo Ponti, executive produced by Robert Altman and Michaelangelo Antonioni, Venice Int. Film Festival, 1998). Her work as the Director of Photography on TREELESS MOUNTAIN was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Cinematography in 2010.  Producer and Directorial credits on other projects include-- WAKING MELE, (Sundance Film Festival, 2000), EDEN’S CURVE, (as Director, Emerging Film Best Feature Award, NCGLFF, 2003), and STATE OF ALOHA, (Halekulani Golden Orchid Award Nominee for Best Documentary at Hawaiʻi Int. Film Festival, 2017). With an aim at encouraging personal storytelling in film, Anne teaches at the School of Cinematic Arts, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
