Synopsis

Humanity has always chased new frontiers—across oceans, up mountains, into space. Today, one of the most profound frontiers is far more intimate: the ability to create life.

On December 28, 1981, Elizabeth Carr became America’s first IVF baby—forever changing reproductive medicine. More than four decades later, Elizabeth has become a journalist, a mother, and a passionate advocate for reproductive rights at a time when fertility care is more politicized—and less accessible—than ever. Her journey anchors a story that asks: how did creating life become so complicated, and where do we go from here?

In parallel, we follow Dutch scientist Dr. Egbert Edelbroek, whose groundbreaking company SpaceBorn United is attempting the unimaginable: developing IVF technology that can function in zero gravity. His mission—to enable the first human conception beyond Earth—could one day help humans reproduce on Mars, but just as crucially, it could transform fertility treatments here on Earth.

With exclusive access to Elizabeth Carr, Dr. Edelbroek, and SpaceBorn United’s laboratory and upcoming missions, IVF: From Earth to Space unfolds as a cinematic journey across time and terrain.

It begins with the moral and medical battles of the early IVF pioneers, moves through today’s infertility crisis and the booming fertility industry, and looks ahead to the next frontier—space—as a testing ground for human resilience and adaptation.

Through Elizabeth and Egbert’s intersecting stories, we meet hopeful couples, pioneering scientists, and the technology reshaping what it means to create life. What starts as a personal exploration of infertility becomes a sweeping odyssey through ethics, innovation, and survival—charting how reproduction itself may evolve as humanity pushes beyond Earth.

This isn’t science fiction. It’s a deeply human story—told with heart, humor, and urgency—about the courage to defy biology, the politics of creation, and the extraordinary future of life itself.
