Shelly is a true crime enthusiast who suffers from agoraphobia. Shelly spends her days analyzing true crime podcasts and engaging with her online sleuthing community. Her structured life is disrupted when her free-spirited sister, Carolyn, unexpectedly arrives at her New York apartment needing a place to crash for a mysterious job.
Despite their differences, Shelly enjoys Carolyn's stay, but things take a dark turn when Carolyn suddenly vanishes after making a cryptic phone call, using their childhood distress code—"Red Dog"—before the line goes dead. Convinced her sister has been kidnapped, Shelly embarks on an investigation, using her online sleuth Fantasy League and an unexpected, odd acquaintance, Jennifer “Jentucky”, from high school.
Shelly and Jen are forced to push past their demons to find Carolyn and themselves.
