The daughter of a fallen female kickboxing champion must confront the emotional trauma caused by her mother to achieve her dream of becoming a professional MMA fighter.
Jane (21) is the emotionally troubled daughter of former kickboxing champion, Cindy (50’s) an abusive addict. Jane dreams of going pro in MMA with Cindy as her coach.
Cindy believes the only way to fight is with anger in “beast mode,” standing up, kicking and punching. The only problem, Jane has PTSD from her abuse and will “disappear” or freeze during fights when they get to be too overwhelming.
After Jane loses an underground fight, the promoter suggests Jane get a new coach. Cindy goes on a bender and winds up in rehab. While Cindy is in rehab, Jane discovers Peter, (Chinese 40’s, former “bad boy” MMA champion) who has a more nurturing, zen approach. She begs him to train her.
Peter recognizes her talent as well as her PTSD symptoms and trains her. At first, she fails, but she starts to understand the value of this kind of training.
The gym’s current female champion, Kara, (Latina, 20’s) is immediately at odds with Jane, sensing impending competition. Kara’s coach is her boyfriend, Brick (40s) a failed MMA fighter who bankrolls the gym they all train in and resents Peter for his success as a fighter.
When Jane earns a chance to fight Kara to get into the UFC, Cindy gets out of rehab and wants to be in her corner again. Jane must choose between Peter and Cindy as her coach. But more importantly, she must decide what loving relationship between a mother and daughter looks like when one of them is an addict.
