Synopsis
In the near future, where abortion is a federal crime, DR. RACHEL MARKS (30s) secretly performs abortions for women in need. Haunted by the death of her sister—whom she could not save—Rachel is eventually caught and sent to a re-education facility for women who have had or aided in abortions.
The institution is run by RUTH ROWAN (50s), the coldly devoted matriarch determined to reshape rebellious women into obedient mothers. Rachel’s roommate is ADA BRANCH (14), a hopeful girl who believes that if she follows the rules she will eventually earn her freedom.
One night, wandering the dark hallways, Rachel encounters JANE BROWN (30s): the polished, public face of the facility whose smiling image appears everywhere—from billboards to Instagram ads promoting “Tradwife” culture.
As Rachel resists the facility’s indoctrination, she forms a protective bond with Ada while becoming increasingly drawn to Jane, whose quiet sadness suggests she may not fully believe the role she plays. At the same time, Rachel is plagued by violent visions of her deceased sister.
Eventually Rachel and Jane grow close and fall for each other. Ruth, threatened by their bond, retaliates with brutal punishment.
During an outreach performance meant to inspire young girls to embrace motherhood, Ada suddenly collapses and is taken away. Later that night Rachel finds her wandering the hallway—pregnant, bleeding, and begging for help.
Rachel knows the pregnancy must be terminated to save Ada’s life, but Ruth intervenes. Rachel is forced to watch as Ada dies. Enraged, Rachel attacks Ruth but is subdued and sedated.
She awakens imprisoned in a restricted wing where Ruth forcibly impregnates her, declaring: “This is how you reclaim your purpose as a woman.”
Just when Rachel loses hope, Jane secretly frees her and reveals the horrifying truth: Ada has been kept alive only as an incubator. Jane urges Rachel to escape with the baby and, during Rachel’s climactic escape, Jane kills Ruth to ensure Rachel and the child survive—but Jane remains behind, stepping into Ruth’s role.
Bloodied and exhausted, Rachel rides a subway train holding the newborn. Beside her, a young girl pauses on Jane’s smiling Instagram post, taps “like,” and scrolls on.

Bio
MK McGehee is a Los Angeles based, award-winning filmmaker and photographer who began her creative journey in site-specific and experiential theatre around the world. She holds a BFA from NYU Tisch and an MFA from UCSD/La Jolla Playhouse. Formerly the Creative Director of a respected LA indie magazine, she produced print and video shoots with artists like Helen Mirren, Jared Leto, Patricia Clarkson and more.
A queer child of the Deep South, MK grew up torn between the gothic beauty of her home and the quiet anger of being condemned for who she was. That tension—between love and repression—inspired her most recent feature script, HYSTERIA, and continues to shape her voice as an artist. A survivor of violence and profound trauma, she channels her lived experience into bold feminist psychological horror. Her debut short film, THE RE-EDUCATION OF JANE BROWN, screened at over two dozen international festivals, winning awards for “Best Narrative Short,” “Best Director,” and “Best Horror Short.”
Most recently, MK’s feature script, THE RE-EDUCATION OF JANE BROWN (based on her proof-of-concept short), was selected as one of only twelve screenplays to take part in Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman’s ‘The Writers Lab’ in 2025. It is currently in development with plans to begin production in 2026.
MK is repped by Zero Gravity Management in Los Angeles.
