Emma Franz started her professional musician for years before applying her creative skills and life experience to her work as a practitioner in film and television. She is a director, producer, cinematographer, film editor, script consultant and documentary screenplay writer, with many years of experience in project research and development. Other professional roles she has filled on published films and television shows include cinematography, sound design and audio editing. Professional music and film engagements have taken Franz across 6 continents and 35 countries, providing the opportunity to work and engage with a diverse range of people from various cultures, social and economic structures and political histories. Franz directed, produced, filmed and wrote her first feature film, ‘Intangible Asset Number 82’ (90 mins, 2008), which won international awards and was broadcast in the USA, Australia, Japan and Finland. Her most recent feature documentary, ‘Bill Frisell, A Portrait’ (2017), premiered in the Documentary Feature Competition at SXSW 2017. Franz holds a Masters in Interdisciplinary Arts (Cinema and Music) with First Class Honours from the University of Melbourne, and has been a guest speaker at such esteemed institutions as the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, the Lincoln Center in New York, MOMA New York, and the National Film and Sound Archives in Australia. She is currently completing a book on elucidating abstracts through non-fiction cinema.
