Jessica Q. Chen is an award-winning Chinese American filmmaker and video producer at the Los Angeles Times. She is currently directing her first feature-length documentary film on the Chinese national surf team that formed after surfing became an Olympic sport.
Her work includes the "Women of Apollo" documentary series, which was nominated for an Emmy in 2020, and vignettes on Cambodian Americans in Long Beach using art to remember their culture, which was nearly eradicated by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s. She was an associate producer for National Geographic’s “Hell on Earth: The Fall of Syria and the Rise of ISIS,” which premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival.
She has a master's from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and a bachelor's in biology from the University of California, Irvine. She speaks Mandarin and basic Arabic.
