Zara Hayes

Zara is a British filmmaker and passionate storyteller. She is currently directing a three-part series for National Geographic about the pioneering life of primatologist Dian Fossey, executive produced by James Marsh (THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING) and narrated by Sigourney Weaver.

Her feature-length theatrical documentary, BATTLE OF THE SEXES, is a political sports documentary about Billie Jean King’s historic tennis victory against Bobby Riggs in 1973. The story has recently been made into a narrative feature starring Emma Stone and Steve Carrell, slated for release September 2017.

Zara recently directed an episode of CAPTIVE for Netflix. CAPTIVE was produced by Lightbox and Hypnotic, from executive producers Simon Chinn (MAN ON WIRE) and Doug Liman (THE BOURNE IDENTITY, EDGE OF TOMORROW).

She is in pre-production on her debut narrative feature POMS, the story of a senior citizen cheerleading team formed within a retirement community. POMS is scheduled to shoot in Fall 2017 and is financed and produced by Sierra / Affinity in conjunction with Rose Pictures and Mad as Birds. 

Zara occasionally directs commercials and has also worked extensively in development at a number of production companies. She holds masters degrees from the University of Cambridge (Natural Sciences) and Birkbeck College, University of London (Philosophy of Mind). She lives between LA and London and has also become part of the BAFTA LA community.
