Happy Latinx Heritage Month! Still unsure about when to use the term Latinx vx. Hispanic? The term Latinx was introduced in the early 2000s as a gender-neutral term for Latino/Latina, in addition to encompassing those who identify outside of the gender binary, such as those who are transgender, or those who are gender-fluid. The term has been embraced by the Latin LGBTQ+ communities. Hispanic is a narrower term which refers solely to the shared language that is Spanish -- for example, a Brazilian individual could be Latinx while non-Hispanic.
